Top Rank Prez: I’d Love To Bring Mikaela Mayer To The UK

Top Rank president Todd DuBoef has big plans in store for WBO, IBF super featherweight champion Mikaela Mayer.

He believes the unbeaten boxer has the potential to become a major star in the United States.

Last year, Mayer raised her game when she won a very tough ten round decision over Maiva Hamadouche to unify the WBO and IBF world titles.

DuBoef admits that his company was initially reluctant to sign Mayer – as his company is primarily focused on male athletes.

The plan, says DuBoef, is to further expand Mayer’s growth in the U.S. market and then eventually bring her out to the UK – where some lucrative fights are possible.

While women’s boxing is still growing in the United States, the UK market is booming with a variety of talented female fighters being signed up by rival promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom.

“We were apprehensive about what to do in the women’s category. We had only dabbled in it, a decade before. But she sold me on it. She has an out of the ring personality, but inside the ring, I wasn’t sure,” DuBoef said to Sky Sports.

“Then her last fight was so sensational. She has delivered in so many fights. Nobody is the face [of boxing] but Mikaela is an important part, particularly in the US. In the UK and Ireland there is Savannah Marshall and Katie Taylor.

“Mikaela and Claressa Shields have done a lot in the US. After a performance like in her last fight? Mikaela grips you. She has real potential in America and I would also love to bring her to the UK.”
