EuroLeague Basketball suspends four Round 19 games

EuroLeague Basketball officially announced on Tuesday the suspension of four Round 19 games, set for Thursday and Friday.

Amid another Covid-19 outbreak, ASVEL Villeurbanne vs Monaco, Real Madrid vs UNICS Kazan, Maccabi Tel-Aviv vs Baskonia and Crvena Zvezda vs Fenerbahce will not take place.

This brings the total of suspended EuroLeague Round 19 games to seven (ALBA Berlin vs Panathinaikos, Zalgiris Kaunas vs Olympiacos, Anadolu Efes vs Bayern Munich).

Given the current circumstances, the EuroLeague will also suspend the battle between CSKA Moscow vs FC Barcelona. The Catalans have several players in the protocols and will not have eight players available to compete. The only game that will most likely take place is the one between Armani Milano and Zenit Saint Petersburg on Friday.

Greg Popovich shows love on former Spur DeMar DeRozan’s hot campaign with Bulls

Photo: Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images

Though now on the separate side of the league, San Antonio Spurs Gregg Popovich has no love lost for DeMar DeRozan.

The star swingman is currently on a tear this season for the rising Chicago Bulls, and the legendary coach has nothing but praise in his former protege.

“It doesn’t surprise me one iota,” Popovich said about DeRozan’s current performance, per TSN’s Josh Lewenberg. “As you well know, he’s a great guy, great teammate. He does what he does and he does it really well, and he’s brought that to Chicago.”

DeRozan, after an unexpected flip by the Toronto Raptors in which he landed in Texas in 2018, found a home in San Antonio in courtesy of the warming presence and reception of Popovich. The four-time All-star has always expressed his admiration for the 72-year-old mentor and how it affected his growth as a player and as a person.

As he is now donning a red and black uniform in his first season with the Bulls, DeRozan remains thankful for the things he learned from the tactician in the past three seasons.

DeRozan, a likely MVP candidate this 2021-2022 campaign, is having a revenge tour with Chicago. Leading his team with a 25-10 record and in the top seed of the barbaric Eastern Conference, he is averaging 26.9 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists while shooting almost 50 percent from the field.

Utah Jazz’ Donovan Mitchell and Philadelphia 76ers’ Joel Embiid were named NBA Players of the Month for December.

Mitchell, winning his first player of the month award, led the third-seeded Jazz (27-10) to a 12-2 record last month while averaging 30.2 points, 5.0 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.2 steals.

Meanwhile, Cameroonian star Embiid strengthened the Sixers’ climb to the East ladder, tallying 29.2 points, 11.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.3 blocks in 13 games. His team is currently at the sixth spot of the conference with a 20-16 card.

GM Travis Schlenk hints on possible moves for struggling Hawks after defeat vs Blazers

Photo: USA TODAY Sports

Following a tough Monday defeat against the Portland Trail Blazers, Atlanta Hawks top executive Travis Schlenk aired some noteworthy sentiments for his team this season.

The Hawks, in spite of the spectacular 56 markers and 14 dimes of franchise man Trae Young, crumbled on their 20th loss. To add further on the recent disappointment, they allowed the Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum-less Blazers to drop 136 points against themselves, a clear testament of their subpar defensive construction.

Joining the 92.9 The Game on Tuesday, Schlenk offered words that the Atlanta fans must certainly have to watch out for.

“It’s a hard pill to swallow when you’re team isn’t playing as well as you think it should,” Schlenk said. “Maybe I should lower my expectations for this team. Ultimately, all this falls on my shoulders. I put this group together and they’re not responding.”

Off to a promising 2021 playoff run in which they saw their second Eastern Conference Finals appearance in six years, the Hawks were expected to break out for more relative success in this 75th season of the league. Unfortunately due to injuries, inconsistencies and COVID-19 issues, they are currently underachieving and filling the lowly 12th seed of the conference.

“It’s the same thing every game. Ultimately, this all falls on me,” Schlenk taking responsibility. “So, we need to take a long look at this and see if this group is the group we saw last year in the second half of the season or if this is the group this year.”

“It’s just frustrating because we’ve seen this group have success. And, to see the group not make the necessary effort plays to win an NBA game, it’s just become frustrating … We have a few weeks before the trade deadline here, and this is what I need to figure out. It’s my responsibility to put a product on the floor that can win, and right now I’m not sure I have done that.”

From the statements given by Schlenk, there is a huge possibility that a roster overhaul will take place sooner. No one has expected that the franchise will struggle in a case like this due to the talent and the flourishing abilities of their young core being led by Young.

Indeed, all eyes should be set on the next urgent plans of the Atlanta’s management, as they continue to dip lower into contention.
