Tony Khan says there’s a dream signing coming to AEW soon

Josh Martinez from Z100 and iHeartRadio interviewed Tony Khan to promote AEW Dynamite in Newark, NJ. The show moves to TBS this Wednesday night.

Khan was asked if he has a dream signee and he was asked if the person is in North America.

Khan talked about some of the recent signings this year such as Adam Cole, Malakai Black, CM Punk, Thunder Rosa, Bryan Danielson, and others. On a dream signing in 2022, he said, “they are in North America and they’re coming and pretty soon and it’s gonna be awesome. I’m very excited.’

Khan did not elaborate on who this person could be. There are dozens of free agents available so there are many people who could sign with AEW this year. Jeff Hardy, Keith Lee, Bray Wyatt, and Braun Strowman are just a few of the big free agent names available.

Rick Steiner appeared after WWE NXT 2.0 went off the air

Former WCW/WWE World Tag Team Champion Rick Steiner was in attendance to watch his son Bron Breakker win the NXT Championship at New Year’s Evil.

After the show, Rick went in the ring and embraced his son. This would be the first time that Rick has been in a WWE ring since the early 90s. Breakker is seen as a future main event on the main roster and this title win is the first big sign that management trusts him to carry the brand. After winning the title, Ciampa gave his nod of approval in a passing of the torch moment.

Breakker noted in an interview that his father was originally supposed to be in the audience for his first match with Ciampa but those plans fell through. There was no sign of Scott Steiner in attendance but this seems to be a positive step towards a re-establishing of the relationship between the Steiner family in WWE as many fans believe that THe Steiner Brothers are long overdue for a WWE Hall Of Fame induction.

Bron Breakker defeated Tommaso Ciampa to win the NXT Championship at New Year’s Evil

A new WWE NXT Champion was crowned tonight at New Year’s Evil.

Here are some notes from the show:

During tonight’s WWE NXT New Year’s Evil broadcast, Carmelo Hayes defeated Roderick Strong to unify the NXT North American championship. Hayes won the match after hitting a guillotine leg drop off the top rope.

There was an AJ Styles-Grayson Waller segment that led to a brawl to set up their match.

In the second match of the night, Matt Riddle and MSK defeated Imperium in a six-man tag match after Riddle hit Marcel Barthel with the RKO.

It was announced that next week’s show will be headlined by AJ Styles vs. Grayson Waller. Also, next week will include the return of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

Mandy Rose retained the NXT Women’s Championship in a Triple Threat match with Raquel Gonzalez and Cora Jade. Jade was close to winning the match but Rose was able to roll up Jade for a clean pin.

Von Wagner was put over big time in a segment with Andre Chase. Wagner interrupted and attacked Chase and then attacked fans planted in the front row.

In the main event, Bron Breakker defeated Tommaso Ciampa to win the NXT Championship. In the final minutes of the match, Breakker through the announcer’s table. Ciampa eventually recovered and he hit consecutive knee strikes to the head and the Fairytale Ending but Breakker kicked out. Breakker won the title after hitting the Bulldog off the top rope and forcing Ciampa to submit to the Steiner Recliner.

Matt Jackson tests positive for COVID-19

Matt Jackson has tested positive for COVID-19.

The announcement was made in the latest bio update on The Young Bucks Twitter account. The bio reads, “Loyal to a fault, but sometimes have to make executive decisions. Always book ourselves strong. Our future grandkids are set for life. Matt has covid.”

Nick previously battled COVID in September 2020. Matt hasn’t wrestled since the December 17th episode of Dynamite.

The Bucks are currently in a storyline that seemingly points to a split within the Super Elite but they are not advertised for any matches in the near future.

We wish Matt a speedy recovery.

Brock Lesnar advertised for next Monday’s WWE Raw

Brock Lesnar is slated to be at next week’s episode of WWE Monday Night Raw as the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA announced today that the newly crowned WWE Champion will be there.

The announcement read, “JUST ANNOUNCED! The New WWE Champion, “The Beast” Brock Lesnar will be live in Philly Next Monday for Monday Night RAW!”

This marks the second straight week that Lesnar will be on the show as he is now listed internally as part of the Raw roster although he is being portrayed as a free agent to continue his feud with Roman Reigns on SmackDown.

Lesnar was added to the five-way match at Day 1 when his scheduled bout with the Universal Champion was nixed when Reigns tested positive for COVID-19. WWE still has plans for Lesnar vs. Reigns to happen, but the way WWE will get there has changed.

Lesnar will defend the WWE Championship Bobby Lashley at the Royal Rumble later this month.

WWE makes a change to Seth Rollins’ name

The evolution of Seth Rollins in WWE is interesting to say the least.

People in management love Rollins because of his in-ring but more importantly (according to the decision-makers) his character work is what keeps him as a player in storylines.

Rollins started his main roster run as part of the super serious Shield faction. He went on to win multiple titles, including the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and he’s slid into various roles over the last few years.

During his feud with the Mysterio family, he was the Messiah, and last year he introduced The Visionary character. Rollins is now playing an outlandish version of himself and he’s taking it a step further with a slight name change.

For years, Rollins has referred to himself as Seth “Freakin” Rollins and that is now officially part of his name. The official change happened at WWE Day 1 on Saturday as it was listed on the lower thirds graphic during his entrance. The “Freakin” part of his name was added to his titantron last night on Monday Night Raw and it has also been added to his profile page on WWE.com.

Rollins wrestled a Fatal 4-Way match last night to determine the number 1 contender for Brock Lesnar’s WWE Championship. He lost the match but there is chemistry with Kevin Owens so perhaps he and Owens will move into a Tag Team Title program heading into WrestleMania season.

Former WWE NXT star signs with AEW

Jake Atlas is officially All Elite as AEW President Tony Khan confirmed on Twitter today that the former WWE NXT star has signed a full-time deal with the promotion.

Khan wrote, “Congratulations on winning your tryout match last night, Jake Atlas! What a great @AEW debut, and now @kennymarquez, I’ll see you Tomorrow night in Newark at the debut of #AEWDynamite on @TBSNetwork! Safe travels, and…Welcome to the team! #JakeAtlas is All Elite!”

Atlas worked the Dark TV tapings last month that included his win over Serpentico. AEW was interested in signing Atlas in the early days of the company, but he decided to sign with WWE instead and worked in NXT.

WWE released him in August along with several other wrestlers. Atlas previously confirmed that he asked for his WWE release prior to being let go.

Atlas announced in September that he wanted to step away from wrestling to focus on his mental health. He also wanted to “explore completely different industries to find my passion again.” Atlas found that and now has a fresh start in AEW.
