Maine firefighters rescue loon trapped by ice on Lake

Firefighters came to the rescue of a loon trapped by ice on Tacoma Lake in Monmouth on Sunday.The fire department said in a Facebook post that ice had been encroaching on a shrinking area of open water on the lake, and the loon was unable to take off.Firefighters worked with members of Avian Haven and the Biodiversity Institute of Portland to go out on the ice to rescue the bird.The Facebook post said one firefighter broke through the ice, but the crew was able to successfully pull the loon to safety.After the loon was off the lake, it was taken to Avian Haven to be checked out. The fire department said the loon is healthy and was unharmed.
