In the previous meeting at Anfield in November 2021 the Reds ran out 4-0 winners. Diogo Jota registered a brace while Thiago and Virgil van Dijk also got on the scoresheet. So far this season Liverpool’s main attacking threat has been Mohamed Salah, who has scored on 22 occasions and leads the league’s scoring charts, however the Egyptian forward is doubtful after sustaining a knock in the FA Cup final. Van Dijk is also doubtful while Fabinho continues his recovery ahead of the Champions League final. Klopp’s side will also be seeking to extend an eight-match away unbeaten run (six wins and two draws). The last time they were beaten on the road was in December 2021 against Leicester City.
As for Southampton they have six wins, seven draws, and five losses this season across 18 Premier League contests on home soil. Even more concerning is the fact Southampton have won just one of their last 10 Premier League games (which includes two draws and seven losses), with their 1-0 victory against Arsenal last month also their only clean sheet in this run. Ralph Hasenhüttl’s team have been indebted to James Ward-Prowse, Che Adams, and Armando Broja. Ward-Prowse is the Saints leading scorer with nine goals, followed by Adams with seven and Broja with six. Valentino Livramento is the only Southampton player ruled out, the defender sustained a knee injury earlier this year and should return next season following surgery.
